Steve Schear is a free-lance activist and organizer from Oakland, CA. He started working with the Grassroots Collaboration Project last year, to help pro-democracy grassroots organizations to work better with each other and the Democratic party. Steve spent time in Tucson in 2024 helping to get Democratic candidates elected and collecting signatures for Prop 139, the Abortion Access initiative. Steve is recruiting online volunteers to help with an important project.

Want To Help Plug Holes Costing Democrats Hundreds of Millions?

ScamPACs are Political Action Committees that raise money claiming to support candidates, and then use the money for other purposes or spend most of the donations on fundraising. There are lots of them, and that’s a big reason why your inboxes get filled with annoying demands for donations. More importantly, ScamPACs are diverting hundreds of millions of dollars that should be going to influence voters to vote for Democrats. Well-intentioned seniors are the biggest victims of ScamPACs.

Want to help stop them? I’m in a new group called “Scambusters” that is working on ways to identify and eliminate ScamPACs. We need help investigating PACs to see if they should be a target for termination. There’s plenty of data readily available on OpenSecrets.org and FEC.gov. We’re looking for volunteers with the ability to do internet research, combined with a lack of fear of asking friendly open-ended challenging questions to both possible scamsters and victims. Retired or active attorneys and journalists would have useful experience, but almost anyone with some chutzpah could do this. Training will be provided.
