Reflections on a Challenging Year - Message from LD17 Chair Nancy Burton
2025 has been an exceptionally difficult year, full of turmoil and distress. Since the inauguration of Donald Trump, our nation has faced a relentless sequence of troubling events and decisions coming from Washington. These actions—both large and small—have left many of us feeling overwhelmed and disoriented, as administration policies and subsequent reversals created a climate of chaos.
In response, we began seeking out others who shared our concerns and frustrations, forming new bonds of collective purpose. Remarkably, people who had not engaged in protest since the 1960s found themselves compelled to take action once again.
Community Response and Activism
The administration’s economic policies are energizing younger voters, many of whom experience firsthand the turmoil these decisions are bringing to their lives. Young parents, concerned for the future of public education, are also joining the movement.
Veterans are significantly affected as well, especially by proposed cuts to VA hospitals and health care services. Many are stepping forward to advocate for preserving these essential supports for those who have served our country.
In cities across America, cruel and heartless immigration raids on local businesses and neighborhoods have created widespread fear and disrupted the fabric of our communities, including neighborhoods and business in Tucson. Families, individuals, businesses and whole cities are left feeling vulnerable and uncertain, as these aggressive actions threaten both their livelihoods and their freedom.
LD17 Democrats: Outreach and Support
In response to the challenges of 2025, LD17 Democrats took action by engaging with voters and partners to provide much needed community support. We focused on outreach, education, and empowerment, shown in a variety of efforts designed to keep our community informed and involved.
Throughout the year, LD17 Democrats worked to help voters understand the shifting national issues and their impact on our community. We offered tools to engage with elected officials and taught volunteers the best way for their communication to get attention. We organized town halls with Kevin Volk, our LD17 House Representative, providing a direct avenue for questions and discussion about statewide and national issues.
We hosted issue forums and meetings to teach voters about significant national and local concerns. Volunteer training sessions equipped precinct committee members with the skills needed to make a difference while house parties brought neighbors together, strengthening connections and encouraging collective action.
Our organization maintained a visible presence in public spaces, setting up tables at local libraries to answer questions and share information. We conducted literature drops and canvassing efforts to personally invite voters to participate in our events, giving them multiple opportunities for involvement
Community Assistance and Resource Collection
Throughout the year, we organized events to collect food and supplies for those in need within our community. Thanks to the generosity and commitment of our volunteers and supporters, we gathered carloads of donations, helping families and students facing financial hardship.
Looking Ahead: Organizing for the Elections
Our work this year has been focused on positioning our district and organization for the upcoming Arizona legislative and Congressional elections. The importance of Arizona in the national political landscape has been recognized by many Democratic organizations, which view the state as pivotal in securing both a Democratic Congress and a Democratic state legislature.
To win next year, our goal is to reach approximately 115,000 voters between January and next November. This ambitious target will require coordinated and sustained effort from our leadership and volunteers.
We will begin petitioning for our candidates in mid-January, marking the official start of our comprehensive organizing campaign. This petitioning drive will launch our door-to-door canvassing activities, which will continue through Election Day. By starting early and maintaining our momentum, we aim to increase voter engagement to support our legislative candidates and flip the Arizona House and Senate..
Closing Thoughts and Call to Action
As the year comes to a close, we encourage everyone to take time to rest and reconnect with family and friends. We will rely on your energy, creativity, financial support, and commitment to help us reach thousands of voters next year. Whether you volunteer your time or lend your voice, donate your money or your support, every action you take will be essential. Thank you for all you’ve done this year, and for the critical work we know you’ll help us with next year. Onward!
