What Tabling Tells Us About MAGA in LD17

Recent interactions at our petition tables have been very instructive. The Free and Fair Voting petition seeks to maintain our rights to early voting, mail-in ballots and district-wide voting centers. Most people eagerly signed, hoping to get this on the November ballot — but some stopped to share opposing views.

Here's a sampling of what we heard: "Voting should be on one day and in person." (Several people said this.) "No one under 65 should get a mail-in ballot." "The only people who should get mail-in ballots are service members stationed overseas." "All voting should be on paper ballots." These comments came from both men and women, and most — but not all — were from the older demographic. One man with homes in two states said he "trusts voting here" but not in his midwestern home state. He also repeated the debunked claim of "400,000 ballots found in a car trunk all made out for one candidate."

These are the true believers of Fox News misinformation. Combined with the number of passersby who avoided eye contact and walked by scowling, they are a reminder that MAGA is present in LD17. We can take nothing for granted in the upcoming November election
