Did You Know?

Did you know some of the written purposes in our Constitution might surprise you?  This year is the 250th anniversary of our country declaring its independence from all kings, dictators, and other autocrats.  For 250 years our Constitution has confirmed that “We the People of the United States …  establish this Constitution for the United States of America.” 

As written by our founders, our Constitution literally says its purpose is to:        

  • form a more perfect Union

  • establish Justice

  • insure domestic Tranquility

  • provide for the common defense

  • promote the general Welfare

  • secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity

Did you know the founding fathers added the emphasis on “We the People” as well as the capitalized words “Union, Justice, Tranquility, Welfare, Blessings, Liberty, and Posterity?”  After years of hearing the mantra “smaller government” as an excuse to lower the taxes for the wealthy and big corporations, is it a surprise to see “promote the general Welfare” as one of these six guiding values listed in our Constitution?

Our health, well-being, safety, treatment, and freedoms were to be valued in 1776 and throughout the following generations.  The phrase “secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity” charges us with reinforcing these values for current and future generations.  We must stand up, stand together, and speak up just as our forefathers did. 

It's 250 years later, and “We the People” are called to protect our constitution and our democratic way of life.  It is our right.  It is our duty.  It is our joy.
