Tales from the Tabling Team

During last year's election cycle, LD17 Democrats set up a “Democracy Table” in Oro Valley to provide an approachable source of information about groups and activities. In these times of attacks on the foundations of our country, people felt the need to act. Since the spring, the table has been going strong. Here’s the latest report from Mel Strijdonk:

The original goal was to support Dem voters grieving the election results and offer an alternative to disaffected Trump voters. We saw many of the first group and none of the second. In 164 interactions before high temperatures shut us down, here’s what we found:

Twice as many women as men stopped to talk, many without any support group. Volunteers described their feelings as “despondent,” “angry,” “sorrowful,” and “horrified.” We offered inclusion into our LD17 group, a newsletter signup, lists of local Dem groups, a volunteer form, and to accompany them to meetings and protests. Just by being “out there,” a visible presence, we let them know they are not alone.

Many respondents said they limit their traditional media intake due to overload and mistrust, preferring NPR or the BBC, with Substack mentioned less than expected.

Except for two people, everyone else, even so-called Independents, strongly aligned with a political party. People often asked what they could sign and were eager to take action. The Justice for All petition, Save Our Schools, and CEBV flyers were popular.

Six men and one woman identified as registered Republicans; three men were Trump supporters, while the others vote Democratic but keep their Republican registration.

I am glad to report that there were moments of humor. One Republican man complained no one talks anymore, but declined a conversation! Another MAGA Republican woman unloaded personal grievances unrelated to politics onto a patient volunteer — a free one-sided therapy session!

Finally, a lesson learned: never set up the table under a tree on wet ground after it’s rained… unless you enjoy biting ants!
