Volunteers Who Went the Extra Mile – Stories of Two Rescues!
When LD17 candidates and volunteers do the work of a campaign, they do it as members of our community. When the need arises, they step up to help their neighbors.
Recently, House candidate Holly Lyon and SaddleBrooke volunteer Pat Cue were canvassing in Oro Valley. When they knocked on one door, they heard a woman inside yelling, "Help, call 911!"—which they did. They looked outside for a hidden key without success, but a neighbor knew where one was kept. Once inside, they found an elderly woman on the floor. She had fallen and been there for 24 hours. They stayed with her until first responders arrived, and they believe she will be okay.
It's not just our canvassers who step up. Even our phone volunteers can provide assistance in emergencies! One evening, Rachel Dawkins was making calls to recruit volunteers when she reached a 93-year-old gentleman whose car had a dead battery in a parking lot near the Tucson airport. He wasn't sure exactly where he was or what he needed to do to get help. After talking through the situation with Chair Nancy Burton, they figured out which lot he was in and got help from the property's management. The next time they spoke, he was safely on his way home.
Everyone involved will say they just did what anyone would do. But in these moments, it's clear our volunteers are exactly the right people to have for our community.
