“I Was Arrested At the Jim Click Blockade”
On August 27, a number of protesters at Jim Click Kia put their freedom on the line by blocking the entrance. Here is an account of what happened by a long time local activist, KS:
“I was arrested at the Jim Click blockade on Aug 27. There were eight of us who agreed to trespass by blocking the driveway with two banners. We let people leave, but not enter. We’d been told by Click security that if we refused to leave the driveway, they would call the police. The police arrived, isolated us and issued citations for criminal trespass. We have to appear in court on September 9. We’re meeting with an attorney to determine how to respond to the charges. Some of us may plead guilty, others not guilty or perhaps nolo contendere (“no contest.”)
It was a personal decision that I struggled with. I’m not a particularly courageous person and the thought of losing my freedom scares me. But I don’t want to be on the wrong side of history. Knowing how autocrats and authoritarian regimes grabbed power should tell us that we’d better get on top of this now or we run the risk of losing our freedoms and our democracy.”
