Boycotting: A Powerful Tool for Change
Boycotting has long been a proven tactic in resistance movements, and it’s as relevant as ever. Protesters and organizers alike recognize that people hold power in their spending—every purchase is a vote for the values they support.
Some feel pressure to change all their spending habits at once, but it’s more sustainable to start small and build momentum. You don’t have to go “cold turkey” overnight. Framing it as the “Jeff Bezos Amazon Boycott” makes the idea more concrete—and more shareable. Quarter-page flyers from ITAA’s Boycott and Build team are available to help spread the word (contact Mel).
Right now, the two major boycotts with the greatest impact are Amazon and Target. While many other companies fund Republican causes, a concentrated, high-profile effort sends a stronger message than scattered smaller boycotts—though local targets (think Jim Click) can still pack a punch in the community.
